2023 – Resolutions! Resolutions! Resolutions!

2022 seems to have whizzed by, it feels like it was 1st January 2022 only yesterday, but the reality is that we are already at 2023. As a new year dawns, many of us will start thinking about New Year’s resolutions, specifically, what we will change or introduce into our lives for the new year. Some fortunate ones will stick to their resolutions, make changes, and sustain them throughout the year. For those, this is an outstanding achievement. However, sadly for most such resolutions last a matter of days, an accomplishment if they are still ‘alive’ on the 4th of January!

Most of us want to start the new year with the best intentions and drivers for ourselves personally and often professionally. Still, as we bask in the remaining days of the Christmas break, our intentions often become rather ambitious and often unachievable. Maybe this is a result of us feeling too relaxed. Is this the reason for us not sticking to our resolutions? Maybe, but there are likely to be many other reasons.

Whatever they are, it can become frustrating when our best-laid plans and intentions do not come to bear.

How might this change? There are many ways, but one I have considered trying is the ‘STOP’, ‘START’, ‘CONTINUE’ model. It is an approach I think is probably worth trying and one I have often used when facilitating training programmes.

For 2023 I am simply going to consider ONE thing I am going to STOP doing, reflect on ONE thing I am going to START doing and finally, ONE thing I am going to CONTINUE to do—.

Simplifying the ‘process’ means there is a lower chance of one setting unachievable expectations for the new year (there is a chance of this still happening, but one hopes a reduced one). Let’s see, and I may even think of writing a ‘review blog’ in a couple of months on my progress.

As 2023 dawns, I hope everyone is kind to themselves and considers setting realistic new year’s resolutions. If one can stick to them, that’s amazing, but to those who don’t quite manage, that is ok too. Above all, be kind to yourself and let the universe do its thing; in my opinion, it will, anyway!!

Wishing all a very happy, healthy and successful 2023!
